Conference Poster Sessions from ALA Wiki

The information below was taken from the Professional Tips section of the ALA Wiki at http://wikis.ala.org/professionaltips/index.php/Conference_Poster_Sessions

  • Poster sessions are a popular means for sharing current research or the mechanisms of recent projects. And yes, there are resources available from ALA and its units for you to use as models for your own program.
  • The ALA Poster Sessions site has a brief list of pointers, “Tips for Presenters,” along with lists of the topics presented at the last two conferences and pictures of posters.
  • There are also some guidelines for the LITA National Forum.
  • The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) offers Virtual Conference Online Poster Sessions substituting a PowerPoint presentation for the poster board.
  • ACRL Members: see “Poster session alphabet soup,” by Brenda Hazard. This A-Z guide to creating a successful poster session experience was published in C&RL News, July/August 2006, volume 67, No. 7.
  • ALA Emerging Leaders (2007 class) wiki page on posters, with sample sessions

Useful Resource – MAC Posters and Papers Mentor Program

leave a comment »

MACMLA logoPosters and Papers Mentor Program

One of the greatest benefits of attending the annual MAC meetings is the opportunity to network with colleagues. By sharing your experiences, accomplishments, and ideas through participation in poster or contributed paper sessions, the likelihood of connecting with others that have common interests is greatly increased.

To ensure all our members have the opportunity to make the most out of the annual meetings, a mentoring program has been established to provide support for MAC members with little or no experience in preparing posters or presenting papers. If you would like to take advantage of this program, an experienced mentor will be assigned to you to assist with the following:

  • Preparing and submitting the paper or poster abstract
  • Providing advice on poster content, design, graphics, and printing
  • Helping with paper content, organization, and presentation

To help you get started now with posters, the 1/9/07 NN/LM SE/A presentation on using PowerPoint to make posters and sample PowerPoint posters is available at http://nnlm.gov/sea/services/webconf/Jan2007/jan092007.html

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MLA held its 2007 Annul Meeting  from October 9 -12, 2007 in Baltimore, MD at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards. The meeting theme was “What’ll it be, Hon? Libraries a la carte.”

Presentation Date: Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Paper Presentation Title:  Online Information Literacy Training: Recipe for Success

Authors: Virginia L. Stone, Catharine S. Canevari, and Shannon D. Jones

Abstract
Objective:
Use distance learning technologies to deliver library instruction.

Methods: Librarians designed a non-credit course using the Blackboard course management system to deliver comprehensive information literacy instruction to health sciences students enrolled in distance education and on-campus programs. The Association of College and Resource Libraries Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education were used as the basis for designing content. Sections for content were organized in the Blackboard course. These included sections for Announcements, Welcome, Getting Started, Exploring Databases, Getting Materials, Evaluating, Citing Sources, and Check Your Skills. Database tutorials, help pages, self-checking assessments are included as part of the content. System-provided tools are used to facilitate communication and push information to remote users. Students enrolled themselves in the course during library orientations, and announcements remind them of available resources within the course to help them with their assignments.

Note: Also presented at the 207 Medical Library Association Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 21, 2007. View abstract on MLAnet.org

An Overview of the Current Working Generations – 2007

leave a comment »

The Medical Library Association, Inc. (MLA), held its 107th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 18–23, 2007, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The meeting theme was “Information Revolution: Change Is in the Air.”

Section Program: Changing with the Times: The Multigenerational Workforce

Session Description: Much has been said about the “next generation librarian” and workforce generation gaps. This session addresses the challenges faced by all library staff in a multigenerational setting. Potential solutions will be presented, as well as background information on the various generations (Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials).

Presentation Date: Monday, May 21, 2007

Paper Presentation Title:  An Overview of the Current Working Generations |  View abstract on MLAnet.org

Authors: Shannon D. Jones, Head, Outreach Services; Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA

Abstract
Before hearing about generational issues in the workplace, this talk will review the traits of the Baby Boomers, Generations X and Y, and the soon-to-be-working Millenials. These labels carry with them stereotypes; however, much can be learned about workplace patterns by understanding how the generations tend to work together. Instead of feeling locked into a stereotype, we can then begin the discussion on how to work most efficiently together in the medical library.
